From a manufacturer of lampshades to a trusted metal industry subcontractor
Although Lankapaja Oy is now one of the leading metal industry manufacturers in Finland, we began our operation modestly on the grassroots level. The Lankapaja Oy founded by Yrjö Kuloaho in 1935 initially manufactured lampshades. The company was based in Punavuori, Helsinki, but we have come a long way to our current manufacturing facilities in Nummela, Lahti, as well as all the way to Sweden. In 2015, our company celebrated its 80-year success story. Today, our manufacturing covers several different fields and many high-quality metal products from industrial contract manufacturing of all sizes to design and furniture products. Find out about the history of our company and contact us if you’re looking for a partner in the metal industry.
As production grew in the 1950s, Punavuori was replaced by Vallila, where our company acquired new facilities. At the time, Lankapaja Oy employed 15 people. By the 1970s, our staff had grown to 24 employees, which was halved down to 12 in the 1980s. Our revenue at the time was 2.6 million marks, and our main field was metal industry subcontracting. Around the same time, an enterprise resource planning system was adopted that allowed us to make our
operations even more efficient.
The 1990s and 2000s were decades of growth and development for Lankapaja. In the 1990s, we moved to facilities in Kivenlahti, Espoo that were 1,500 square meters in size and opened our first sheet metal work center. At that point, sheet metal products and related expertise had come to stay. During the 2000s, our company took more great leaps forward as the forerunner logistics company K. Hartwall Oy became a shareholder of Lankapaja. We were able to combine our skills with logistical solutions such as laundry and hotel trolleys and transport solutions as well as metal products related to furnishing shops, including shelves, baskets, spindles and racks – all of which became a regular part of our product selection. We also moved from Espoo to Nummela to much larger facilities of 12,000 square meters.
The early 2010s were characterised by strong expansion. We expanded our manufacturing facilities by a whopping 10,000 square meters, opened a branch in Lahti, and due to increased demand, also to the city of Skillingaryd in Sweden. Today, we focus mainly on contract manufacturing and are able to produce all kinds of metal work from small components to holistic solutions in all our factories for our customers.
